This section of the Book of Acts is reminiscent of Jesus’ final journey to Jerusalem, and Paul will experience the same reaction by the Jewish religious leadership and by the Roman officials.

In Chapter 21 there is a dramatic prophecy of the danger Paul faces, and a tearful good-bye scene with those who love him. Paul declares that he will follow God’s will, and move on toward Jerusalem, in spite of the danger. Paul meets with James, who leads the Jerusalem church, agrees to be purified with a Nazarite Vow, and then returns to the Temple seven days later. Finally Paul is arrested and brought up on charges of defiling the Temple.

Chapter 22 and 23 recount Paul’s lengthy defense of himself before the Jews of Jerusalem. It doesn’t go very well, and because of his Roman Citizenship, the Roman government removes him from Jerusalem, and puts him in protective custody in Caesarea.

Chapter 24 and 25 recount Paul’s defense before the Roman official Festus. The Roman officials find no offense in Paul, and are concerned for his safety. The Jewish religious officials are painted as the bad guys, plotting Paul’s death.

Notice a few things in these closing chapters of Acts:

  • Paul has a burning desire, and is guided by God to go to Rome. The author of Luke/Acts makes a major point of this movement toward Rome – the very center of the known world at that time.
  • Paul almost always begins his defense with an account of his call as an Apostle. He retells his road to Damascus story, and appeals to it again and again. This very personal experience fuels his mission and ministry.
  • Paul never falters from his call to spread the Gospel to the Gentiles, and uses every opportunity to do so.
  • The amount of support and encouragement Paul received from the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem is ambiguous at best. Did they try to help Paul? Did they participate in Paul’s demise? Did they ever fully accept Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles? These questions are left unanswered and unresolved.
