Austin Street Centre
When I was a boy, my Grandfather from time to time would put his hand to the side of my head and pull a piece of candy from my ear. It was magic!
Once a month, I get to witness that same kind of magic happen within our church. I show up at 5:30 pm to the first-floor kitchen where hundreds of sandwiches, chips and cookies appear for delivery to the homeless men, women, and children of Austin Street Centre.
Clearly, the Austin Street meals "appear" because of the numerous caring members of Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church. In these acts of care and compassion for total strangers, the true magic lies. The fact that the Holy Spirit touches so many and causes us to act for the downtrodden and disenfranchised is simply amazing.
And the residents of the shelter truly appreciate our generosity. This appreciation is expressed both individually in the form of a sincere "Thank you" or "God bless you," and corporately in the form of applause, an appreciation not unlike that of a small boy appreciating the love of a grandfather and a simple piece of candy.
Thank you to all who help make this magic happen.
If you would like to join the caring volunteers who help provide meals or who help serve the residents of Austin Street Centre, please contact either myself or Victoria Seitz. Even if you can't do once a month, we'd love your help anytime!
