"God has made me forget all
my hardship
and all my
father's house"
-Genesis 41:51 (Joseph speaking to his brothers who sold him into slavery.)
Everyone has a past - memories that trouble, disturb and haunt. Part of the journey of the spirit involves dealing with such things; letting go of those things that harm us and hold us back, and not allowing the past to have such power over our present or our future. Scripture points to the power of God that helps us move forward and "forget" the hardship of the past. Joseph is given the power to "forget" his hardship and his brother's sin.
Paul writes in Philippians 3:13-14:
Beloved, I do not consider that I have
made it my own; but this one thing,
forgetting what lies behind and
straining forward to what lies ahead,
I press on towards the goal
for the prize of the heavenly call
of God in Christ Jesus.
The leaning of the Spirit; the leaning of the call of God; the leaning of the growing person of faith is always forward! Forgetting what is past becomes prerequisite for living fully in the present and moving confidently into the future.
Scripture also suggests that God's redemption includes "forgetting" our sins and our misdeeds. Luke's Gospel paints a picture of God the Father running to meet the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32. The boy has spent his inheritance, dishonored his family, and snubbed everything the father holds dear. Yet when he approaches his father's home, the loving parent runs to greet him. This divine "forgetfulness," this grace, permeates the Kingdom of God, and the lives of those who would live there.
God, make us a forgetful people;
--able to bury past wounds and slights;
--able to forget the sin and pain
of our past.
Help us to forget the
way you forget; with compassion
and grace.
Sharpen our memories
for mercy, for seeds of hope and
for the smallest signs of Your presence.
In Jesus' name we pray.
AMEN.
