Yesterday, I was looking over the list of graduating High School Seniors. I realized I had taught several or most of them in choir over the years. Wonderful memories and visual images came to mind as I thought about these individuals, marveling that they could already be seniors taking the next step in their lives. Last night, my husband, Rick, reminded me of an interesting story about this same class-
"I remember in 1998 CCPC had enough 3rd graders to fill two classes but in the old building only one room was available. An urgent call went out for teachers. More volunteers were needed to pass on God's Words to the children. Of course, not everyone had time. Some were already teaching another grade and would have to switch. Others said I don't really know how but I will help. In the end, the year was quite a success both in the classroom and the interactive Market Place with costumes and actors. Some who taught all those 3rd graders kept on teaching, some moved on to other things but all were blessed by the children. God's Word was passed on and the teachers did make a difference."
This Sunday that same class will stand and be recognized as they take the next step in their lives. You may know some of them. They recognize you, too! They remember you from Sunday School, confirmation, kindergarten, choir, Mo-Ranch, and mission trips. They recognize the part their Canyon Creek family has played in their faith journey. I would be willing to bet that each one of them who was a part of that 1998 3rd grade class, remembers that year above all others. They talked forever about the market place - a rotation model before there was officially rotation Sunday School.
I can't help but think of Jeremy's powerful sermon last Sunday about passing on God's Word to future generations. Who will do that if it's not you and me? I think of the precious Cherubs this year - who will nurture and teach them? Will they look at Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church as their family, too? Will they recognize you because you taught them, accompanied them, prayed for them and joined them on their journey?
The opportunity is NOW. June 8th begins a new session of Summer Sunday School. Can you help teach the stories of David and Goliath, Noah's Ark and Jesus's Baptism? There are videos to watch, games to play and creative arts all planned. But who will lead them?
As you congratulate and hug those seniors this Sunday, I pray your heart will be moved to answer God's call to continue to be a family for His children by signing up to teach four weeks this summer. You will be giving these young children the same opportunity to know God's Word. Don't blink! Tomorrow, these kindergartners will be standing before us as graduating high school seniors. Will they recognize you?
God, thank You for the opportunities
You place before me each day to live out
my faith. Give me the courage to act on
that faith as I seek to do Your will.
Here I am, Lord. I will go as You
lead me. Amen.
