[Then God said to Noah] ‘As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of covenant between me and the earth.’
In this passage, Gods sends a rainbow to Noah and to the other survivors of the Flood, as a sign of God’s covenant that never again will God send a flood to destroy the earth. When I study this passage I am reminded of the constant love and forgiveness shown to me by my parents. They were always there to lovingly correct me. I had the ever-present certainty that they loved me deeply, and that they would never abandon me.
The love of a parent is fiercely protective, and at its best, unconditional. Parental love speaks more about the parent than it does of the child. The awe-inspiring love of God is not borne of any merit of ours, but by the loving and forgiving nature of our unfathomable creating and sustaining God.
O loving and forgiving heavenly Father: We constantly give you worship and praise for your love, protection, and forgiveness. Thank you for the promise you made to never abandon us or ever again flood the earth with your wrath. Help us shine your light of love and forgiveness in all the dark places we travel in our everyday lives. AMEN
