A Glance at the
CHRIST CHURCH OF SOUTH INDIA COMMUNITY

Jesus Christ, as the head of the Church, gave commission to His disciples, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of age.”

In obeying Christ’s commands, it is believed that St.Thomas, the Apostle came to South India with the gospel in the first century making our forefathers His disciples; thereby adding them to the Church. The church in South India flourished under the eternal guidance and chosen leadership of our predecessors.

Almost 2000 years of growth witnessed the emergence of many denominations. In the 18th century, many missionaries from the West introduced reformation to these churches. Also in the 20th century, ecumenism and church unity strongly appealed to many Christian of South India. Accordingly, the Church Missionary Society, the London Missionary Society, the Basal Missionary Society, the British Methodist Church, the Congregational Church and the Reformed Church in South India merged in the year of our Lord 1947 giving birth to the Church of South India.

When the Church of South India (CSI) was inaugurated on 27th September 1947, it was acclaimed as a significant event in the Church Union Movement, because for the first time after centuries of historic division, the Episcopal and non-Episcopal traditions were brought together to form a united church. At present, the Church of South India has 3.5 million members. The administrative body of the church is the CSI Synod with its headquarters at Chennai (Madras) India; presided over by the Moderator of the Church of South India.

Since 1960s, members of the Church of South India started immigrating to North Texas. Subsequently, they organized worship practices of their mother church in India. From January 1991, twenty families have been worshipping as a CSI congregation (known as the Christ Church of South India) at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Dallas, Texas. Rev.Dr.EV Eapen in addition to his duties as an Episcopal priest also served the Christ CSI Church as its Presbyter-in-charge. Rev.M.M.Mathew served as an Associate Minister.

On August 21, 2006 Rev.Dr.EV Eapen passed-away and the Christ CSI Church started looking for a new place of worship and a new Presbyter. The search resulted in a happy note when the Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church offered its John Calvin Chapel for the worship services of Christ CSI members. Rev.Mathew Idiculla stationed at Chicago agreed to be the Presbyter and Rev.M.M.Mathew conducts the worship services in our mother-tongue, i.e. Malayalam.

Christ CSI children attend CCPC Sunday school on Sunday mornings. Christ CSI members attend the CCPC worship service on 4th Sunday of the month. We glorify the One who still multiplies the five barley loaves and two small fish.
