Job Description:

The Sunday School Childcare Worker plays a vital role in supporting the Children’s Ministry by providing consistent care and nurturing for infants through 5th grade. This position helps create a welcoming, safe, and engaging environment where all children and families experience the love of Christ through intentional hospitality, compassion, and joy.

Rooted in the Matthew 25 vision, this role supports the church’s commitment to inclusion, equity, and community-building by fostering spaces where every child feels a sense of belonging and value. Responsibilities include assisting with Sunday morning programming—such as Sunday School and Sacred Play, which run weekly from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm—as well as occasional support for special events, holiday programs, and/or family ministry activities throughout the year.

In addition, the Childcare Worker helps with classroom set-up and clean-up, maintains a tidy and organized learning space, and communicates any needs or concerns to ministry leadership with care and professionalism.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Provide compassionate, attentive care for infants through 5th grade during Sunday School and Sacred Play.
  • Interact with children, families, and fellow volunteers in a manner that reflects patience, kindness, and respect.
  • Greet children and families warmly and ensure proper check-in and check-out procedures are followed for safety and accountability.
  • Help guide children through classroom transitions and encourage engagement during lessons, music, story time, and crafts.
  • Remain attentive to any food allergies, medical conditions, or special needs, and follow all established safety protocols.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming classroom environment; assist with set-up and clean-up before and after activities.
  • Adhere to and uphold all church safety and child protection policies and procedures.
  • Stay calm and resourceful in high-energy or stressful situations, using positive guidance techniques.
  • Collaborate with ministry leadership and team members to ensure consistent, quality care and communication.

Additional Job Functions:

  • Welcome each child and parent with warmth and hospitality upon arrival, helping to create a sense of belonging for all families.
  • Provide clear, helpful information to parents and guardians about classroom activities, lesson objectives, and any important updates.
  • Foster positive, respectful relationships with children and their families to support spiritual development, encourage parent engagement, and connect families with appropriate resources.
  • Serve as a caring and consistent presence that reflects the church’s commitment to inclusion, compassion, and community as expressed in the Matthew 25 vision.
  • Support special events, holiday programs, and family ministry activities as needed throughout the year.

Qualifications:

  • A heart for ministry with children and a commitment to fostering an inclusive community.
  • Experience working with children in a classroom, camp, or ministry setting is preferred.
  • Reliable, patient, and adaptable, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • CPR and First Aid Certified, or willing to obtain certification within three months of hire (training may be provided).
  • Completion of child protection training and prevention training for shaken baby syndrome (or willingness to complete upon hire).
  • Must pass a background check and complete ongoing required child protection training.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a ministry team that honors diversity and equity in all forms.
